What an applicant tracking system actually does

It parses your file into fields. Name, contact, employers, titles, dates, education, skills.
It filters and ranks only when a recruiter asks it to, using terms the recruiter chooses.
It does not assign your resume a score out of a hundred. No such score is produced anywhere in the system.
It does drop, scramble, and merge content it cannot parse. Tables, text boxes, multiple columns, and anything sitting in a document header are the usual causes.
It matches strings, not meaning. Grant administration and grants management are the same work and two different strings.

How this works
